Hard surface modelling is manufactured objects — weapons, vehicles, machinery, architecture, electronics. Anything built rather than grown.
It is a distinct discipline from organic modelling, with different rules, different tools and a different definition of “correct.”

What Makes It Different
Organic modelling forgives. A slightly uneven surface on a creature reads as anatomy. Hard surface does not forgive, because manufactured objects have properties your eye checks automatically:
- Panels meet at consistent gaps — uneven panel lines read as broken immediately
- Edges are never perfectly sharp — real manufacturing leaves a small bevel that catches light
- Surfaces are smooth or deliberately textured, never accidentally lumpy
- Parts look assembled — separate components, not one continuous blob
The Single Most Important Rule
Bevel every hard edge. Even slightly.
A perfectly sharp edge does not exist in the physical world and renders as a dead black line with no highlight. A tiny bevel catches light along the edge, and that highlight is most of what makes a surface read as real metal or plastic.
This one change improves hard surface work more than any other single thing.
Booleans Are Fine — With a Caveat
Boolean operations have a reputation for producing messy topology, and the criticism is largely outdated for static props.
If the object will never deform, triangles and n-gons in flat areas are harmless — the engine triangulates everything anyway. What matters is whether shading looks correct.
Booleans genuinely cause problems on curved surfaces, where bad topology produces visible shading artefacts. That is where cleanup is worth the time.
Where the Realism Actually Comes From
Not the modelling. Three things do the heavy lifting:
Panel lines and part separation — breaking a form into components suggests manufacturing and gives the eye something to read.
Edge wear — real objects wear at their edges first. Slight scratching or exposed material along the edges implies use.
Roughness variation — uniform roughness is the clearest sign of inexperienced work. Fingerprints, smears and wear break it up. See our PBR guide.
