Where to Get Free 3D Assets in 2026 (And How to Read the Licence)

There was a time when good HDRIs cost money and “free” meant a 512px JPEG with a watermark across it. That era is over. The tricky part now is not finding free assets, it is knowing which licences actually let you ship them.

Poly Haven — the first bookmark to give any 3D artist

Poly Haven is a huge library of HDRIs, PBR textures and models, formed when HDRI Haven, Texture Haven and 3D Model Haven merged into one site. Everything on it is CC0, and that word is the part worth understanding: CC0 is not “free with credit”, it is public domain. You can ship it in a paid game and owe nobody anything. That is rarer than it sounds.

Check the licence, every time

CC0 means do anything. Creative Commons BY requires attribution. Royalty-free usually restricts redistribution. “Free for personal use” means you cannot ship it commercially at all. Before an asset enters a client or commercial project, read the actual terms rather than the word “free” on the download button. It takes thirty seconds and saves real trouble later.

Scan your own materials

If you want textures nobody else has, LUMEN-PS turns an ordinary flatbed scanner into a photometric-stereo material scanner. Four scans give you normal, albedo, roughness, height and alpha maps. It works on any shallow surface relief: paper, fabric, bark, foliage, pressed flowers.

Models and wardrobe

For character work, the 11,000+ free 3D clothing models collection is a genuine treasure trove for fashion and character artists.

Explore the full free collection in the 3DxDEV Library, and if you have made something worth sharing, submit it and we will feature it with full credit.
