Cloth Tearing Is Now Easy in Blender 5.2 (Geometry Nodes)

Tearing cloth has historically been one of the fiddlier effects to pull off in Blender. That’s changing: as artist Jan van den Hemel (@JanvandenHemel) highlighted, Blender 5.2 makes cloth tearing genuinely easy thanks to new Geometry Nodes-powered modifiers.

What Changed

Blender 5.2 introduces modifier functionality built on Geometry Nodes that handles the mesh separation involved in tearing. Rather than fighting with manual rip setups or add-ons, artists can now drive tearing procedurally as part of the modifier stack — which means it’s non-destructive and far easier to art-direct.

Why It Matters

Cloth destruction shows up constantly in VFX and game cinematics: flags shredding, banners ripping, clothing catching and tearing during action. Making this a native, node-driven process lowers the barrier for solo artists and small teams who previously would have avoided the effect or faked it. Because it’s Geometry Nodes-based, it’s also fully controllable — you decide where and how the tearing happens.

The Bigger Picture

This is part of a broader trend: Blender keeps absorbing effects that used to require specialized tools directly into Geometry Nodes. If you’re building a procedural VFX skillset, cloth tearing is a great addition — and it pairs naturally with destruction and simulation workflows.
