You can build a complete 3D pipeline in 2026 without paying for anything. Not a compromised one — an actually professional one. Here is the stack, in the order you would use it.

Modelling, Sculpting and Animation
Blender. Modelling, sculpting, UV, rigging, animation, simulation, rendering, compositing and video editing in one free package. It is the reason this list is possible at all.
Texturing
Material Maker for node-based procedural materials, ArmorPaint for PBR painting, and Krita for anything hand-painted. Between them they cover most of what a paid texturing suite offers.
Assets and Reference
Poly Haven and ambientCG for CC0 HDRIs, textures and models — public domain, usable commercially with no attribution. PureRef for reference boards. Kenney and Quaternius for CC0 game assets.
Retopology
AutoRemesher is free and MIT licensed with both a GUI and a CLI. Instant Meshes remains the more forgiving option on messy geometry.
Animation and Motion
Mixamo for auto-rigging and library motion, Cascadeur for physics-assisted keyframing on its free tier, and local text-to-motion tools for filling gaps.
Engine
Godot if you want zero licence risk, Unreal or Unity if you need their strengths and stay below their revenue thresholds.
Audio and Supporting Tools
Freesound for Creative Commons sound effects, Kenney Audio for CC0 game sounds, Google Fonts for anything typographic, GIMP for image editing.
What You Give Up
Being honest: ZBrush is still better at sculpting, Substance is still better at texturing, and Marvelous Designer has no free equivalent for pattern-based clothing. Studio pipelines and collaboration tooling are where paid software pulls furthest ahead.
None of that prevents you producing professional work. It means certain specialised tasks take longer.
