Slow renders are usually not a hardware problem. Most scenes have two or three specific settings sabotaging them, and fixing those beats buying a new GPU.
1. Your Sample Count Is Too High
People set 1000+ samples out of caution. With adaptive sampling and denoising, far fewer usually produces an indistinguishable image.
Enable adaptive sampling, set a noise threshold, and let Blender stop when the image is clean enough. Then enable the denoiser. Together these often cut render times by more than half with no visible cost.
2. Light Bounces Are Set Too High
Default bounce counts are conservative. Most scenes look identical at far lower values — and interior scenes are the only common case that genuinely needs many bounces.
Reduce total bounces, and cut transmission bounces hard unless you have glass.
3. You Are Rendering on CPU Without Realising
Check your render device. If VRAM is exhausted, Cycles falls back to CPU and performance collapses. Watch VRAM usage — if you are pinned at 100%, that is your answer.
Enable OPTIX on NVIDIA hardware rather than CUDA; it is meaningfully faster.
4. Subdivision Is Too High
Viewport subdivision at 3 and render subdivision at 6 means you are rendering geometry nobody can see. Most objects look identical at 2.
Check every modifier stack in the scene. One forgotten object at high subdivision can dominate your render time.
5. Your Textures Are Far Larger Than Needed
8K textures on an object occupying 200 pixels of frame is wasted memory and wasted time. Downscale anything not in hero close-up. This also frees VRAM, which addresses problem three.
6. Volumetrics Are Doing More Than You Think
Volume scatter and dense fog are among the most expensive things in any renderer. If a scene suddenly became slow, check whether you added atmosphere. Reduce step rate or fake it in the compositor.
The Fastest Fix of All
Render in EEVEE. If your scene does not require path-traced accuracy, you are waiting for precision the final image will never show.
