Diffeomorphic — usually just called the DAZ Importer — is a free Blender add-on for bringing DAZ Studio characters into Blender with their rigs, morphs and materials intact. It is the reason a lot of people never buy a commercial bridge.
The Problem It Solves
DAZ Studio has an enormous character and clothing library, much of it cheap. Blender has the renderer, the modifiers and the node systems. The gap between them is the hard part.
Export a DAZ figure as FBX and you get geometry and a skeleton. What you lose is everything that made the figure worth buying: the morph system, the corrective shapes that fire when a joint bends, the material setup, and the rig controls.
Diffeomorphic transfers that structure rather than flattening it.
What Comes Across
- Morphs and shape keys, including expression and body-shape sets
- JCMs — joint-controlled morphs, the correctives that stop shoulders and hips collapsing when posed
- Materials rebuilt as Blender shader node trees rather than flat colour
- Rigs, with an option to convert to Rigify for a Blender-native control setup
- Clothing and hair fitted to the figure
The JCM transfer is the part that matters most and the part FBX cannot do. Without correctives, a DAZ figure looks fine in A-pose and falls apart the moment it is animated.
Be Honest About the Licence
The add-on is free. The content is not.
DAZ assets carry their own EULA, and what you may do with a rendered image is different from what you may do with the mesh itself. Redistributing converted geometry, or shipping a DAZ figure inside a game, is a different permission to rendering a still.
If the work is commercial, read the licence on the specific product. This is the same discipline we cover in our guide to free assets sorted by licence risk — “free to download” and “free to ship” are different permissions.
Performance Expectations
DAZ figures are dense. A single character with full morph sets can carry hundreds of shape keys, and that cost is real in the viewport.
Import only the morphs you need. The importer lets you choose, and taking everything because it is there is the usual reason people conclude Blender is slow.
For game work the figure needs retopology regardless — DAZ topology is built for subdivision rendering, not real-time.
Who It Is For
Anyone who wants finished characters without sculpting them: previs, illustration, animation tests, archviz entourage. It is not a substitute for learning character art, and it is excellent at getting a credible human into a shot today.
