Blender Finger Weights: Fix Collapsing Knuckles with a Simple Grip Test

A hand that looks clean in a relaxed pose can fail as soon as it closes around a prop. Test finger weights against the gestures your character actually uses before animating a detailed performance.

Build three useful hand poses

Create an open hand, a loose fist and the intended prop grip. Keep the wrist orientation comparable so you can isolate finger behavior. Inspect the thumb separately; its movement and placement are not well judged by copying the other fingers’ test.

Watch the knuckle silhouette and the spaces between fingers. Check the back of the hand as well as the palm, since a repair can move the collapse out of the first camera view.

Inspect joints and influence transitions together

Compare each visible crease with the intended joint location. If the mesh bends around an unsuitable pivot, stop and assess the skeleton before repainting. If the pivot is suitable, inspect whether neighboring finger or palm groups influence the wrong vertices.

Repair a small area, repeat the three poses and compare the before/after result. Avoid judging a finger solely by the colors of its weight map: the deformation is the deliverable.

Validate the grip in motion

Animate a short transition into the grip and back out. Check that fingers do not pass through the prop during the transition even if both endpoints look acceptable. Retargeted clips should receive the same inspection.

Export the short action and compare the hand in the engine. Record any required corrective pose or limitation so the animation team knows the reliable range of the rig.
