No. GTA 6 is not made in Unreal Engine 5. Rockstar Games builds its titles on RAGE — the Rockstar Advanced Game Engine — its own in-house technology, and GTA 6 runs on the latest iteration of it.

Why Do People Assume It Is Unreal?
Because Unreal has become shorthand for “good graphics”. When a trailer looks exceptional, the assumption is Unreal 5, Lumen and Nanite. That assumption is wrong often enough to be worth correcting.
Several of the most visually impressive games ever made run on proprietary engines: Rockstar on RAGE, id Software on id Tech, Naughty Dog and Guerrilla on their own technology, Ubisoft on several in-house engines.
What Is RAGE?
Rockstar’s internal engine, developed over roughly two decades and used across Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption. It is built specifically around what Rockstar makes: enormous open worlds, dense simulation, heavy streaming and large-scale online play.
That specificity is the whole point. A general-purpose engine has to serve everyone; RAGE only has to serve Rockstar.
Why Not Just Use Unreal?
Three reasons that apply to any studio at that scale:
- Royalties. At GTA revenue levels, a percentage of sales is an extraordinary sum. Maintaining an engine team is cheaper.
- Control. Rockstar can build exactly the streaming and simulation systems its worlds require, rather than working around another engine’s assumptions.
- Institutional knowledge. Twenty years of tooling, pipeline and staff expertise does not transfer for free.
Does the Engine Explain the Graphics?
Barely. Engines set a ceiling; art direction, budget and time decide where you land under it. GTA 6 looks the way it does because of an enormous art team and a long development cycle, not because of a rendering feature.
This matters for anyone choosing an engine: your renders will not look like a Rockstar trailer because you installed the same software.
What Should You Use?
Unless you are running a studio with a dedicated engine team, use a commercial engine. Building your own makes sense at Rockstar’s scale and almost nowhere else.
