PixZels — 3D Pixel Art Program

PixZels is a free browser-based program for making pixel art using a 3D voxel workflow. You build or generate a low-resolution 3D model, then export it as sprite sheets from 8 or 16 directions.

The creator is explicit that it is not AI-based — it is a modelling tool, not a generator.

The Problem It Solves

Hand-drawing a character in 8 directions, in every animation frame, is one of the most repetitive jobs in 2D game development. A single walk cycle across 8 directions is dozens of frames that all have to stay consistent with each other.

Building the character once in 3D and rendering the directions removes that consistency problem entirely. The proportions cannot drift between angles, because it is the same object.

What You Can Do

  • Turn a 2D dot image into an editable 3D pixel model
  • Edit geometry voxel by voxel
  • Export 8 or 16 direction sprite sheets automatically
  • Export OBJ models and animated GIFs
  • Work entirely in the browser — no install

Who It Suits

Anyone making top-down, isometric or 2.5D games — the genres where multi-directional sprites are unavoidable. It is also useful for vehicles, props and character turnarounds, where consistent angles matter more than expressive hand-drawn frames.

The Honest Trade-off

Voxel-derived sprites have a look. Clean, consistent, slightly mechanical. That is exactly right for some games and wrong for others.

Hand-drawn pixel art carries deliberate imperfection — a squash on a step, an exaggerated frame, a silhouette that reads better than it should. A 3D pipeline gives you consistency and speed; it does not give you that. Many developers use it for the boring directions and hand-tune the frames players see most.

Alternatives

MagicaVoxel is the better-known free voxel editor, though it is aimed at models rather than sprite-sheet output. For traditional 2D work, Pixelorama and LibreSprite are free — see our guide to free pixel art software.
