UniV is a free, open-source Blender add-on that layers a large set of quality-of-life operators onto the built-in UV editor. It is the add-on people install when they conclude that UV work is not actually hard, Blender's default tools just make it feel that way.
What It Adds
- Smarter unwrap, relax and rectify — better starting results than the defaults
- Quick snap, stitch and weld — joining islands without hunting through menus
- Quadrify and straighten — forcing islands into clean rectangular layouts
- Packing tools — more control over how islands fill the UV space
- Selection and transform helpers — the small operations you repeat hundreds of times
Why UV Work Feels Slow in Stock Blender
The individual operations exist. What is missing is the connective tissue — the small conveniences that turn five steps into one.
That gap is why people avoid UVs, postpone them, or let Smart UV Project ruin a good model. UniV fills it. Nothing here is impossible without the add-on; everything here is faster with it.
Free vs Pro
The core add-on is free and open source, and it is genuinely complete rather than crippled. A paid Pro version exists with additional tooling, but the free build is what most people need.
Installing It
Available on Blender Extensions — install from inside Blender via Edit, Preferences, Get Extensions.
UniV vs Mio3 UV
UniV is the broader toolkit; Mio3 UV is narrower and tuned for character work. They coexist happily, and many people install both and use whichever has the better tool for the island in front of them.
Worth Knowing
No UV add-on decides where your seams go. That is still a judgement call about how a surface should be cut, and it is the part that actually determines whether your UVs are good.
