Impact Frames is a free Unreal Engine 5 Blueprint and material pack that adds the brief stylised flashes on contact that make anime fight scenes land. It ships with 15 post-process impact frames plus ready-made setups.
What an Impact Frame Actually Is
In anime, the moment of contact is often a single frame that is not the characters at all — a white silhouette, an inverted flash, a smear of abstract shapes. It holds for one or two frames and is gone before you consciously register it.
That frame is doing enormous work. It hides the transition between poses, implies force the animation never actually shows, and gives the eye a jolt that reads as impact.
It is one of the highest-value tricks in action animation precisely because it costs one frame.
Why It Is Hard in 3D
3D pipelines are built for continuity — smooth interpolation, consistent lighting, physically plausible motion. An impact frame is a deliberate break in all three.
Everything about a default 3D setup resists it, which is why so much 3D action feels smooth but weightless. The hits do not land because nothing interrupts.
What the Pack Gives You
- 15 post-process impact frames — the flash effects themselves
- Blueprint setups — triggering them on hit events
- Materials — the underlying effect construction
Using Them Well
Restraint. Impact frames work because they are rare and brief — one or two frames, on hits that matter. Used on every contact they stop registering and start reading as a flicker problem.
Pair them with a hitstop: freeze the animation for a few frames on impact. Together, hitstop and impact frames do more for perceived weight than any amount of extra animation.
