“Blender is free” is the usual answer, and it is a good one. It is also not the only one — and for some jobs it is not the best one.
Here is what else is genuinely free, and when each beats reaching for Blender.

Blender — The Default, and Why
Modelling, sculpting, UV, texturing, rigging, animation, simulation, rendering, compositing and video editing in one package, with the largest tutorial ecosystem in 3D. If you are learning 3D generally, learn Blender.
The honest downside is scope. It is a large application, and for a narrow task you navigate a lot of tools you will never use.
Blockbench — Low-Poly and Boxy Models
Built for exactly one style, and unbeatable at it. Box modelling with integrated pixel texture painting and animation, in a browser or on desktop.
Use it when: you are making low-poly, voxel-adjacent or Minecraft-style assets. Not when: you need organic forms or proper UV work.
Dust3D — Creatures, Fast
Build from connected spheres, and it generates the surface, unwraps UVs and can auto-rig. The two stages where beginner projects usually die are handled for you.
Use it when: you need a rigged creature quickly for a prototype. Not when: topology quality matters or the subject is hard-surface.
Wings 3D — Pure Subdivision Modelling
In development since 2001, built on a winged-edge structure that makes operations unusually predictable. No animation, no rendering — a modeller and nothing else.
Use it when: modelling is the part you enjoy and general-purpose software feels like clutter.
MakeHuman — Human Base Meshes
Parametric human generation. Sliders for proportions, output ready to sculpt or rig. Saves days when you need a plausible human starting point.
MeshLab — Scan Cleanup
Not for creating, for repairing. Cleaning photogrammetry output, decimating, filling holes and processing point clouds. Unglamorous and genuinely necessary if you work with scan data.
Which Should You Actually Learn?
Blender, unless you already know your niche. It transfers everywhere and nothing else covers the whole pipeline.
But specialised tools are not lesser — they are faster at their one job. The professionals using Blockbench for low-poly work are not doing so because they cannot use Blender.
