Surface Mesh — Car Body Modeling from Bezier Curves

Surface Mesh is a free Blender add-on for building car bodywork from Bezier curves — draw the curves and generate clean surface meshes from them.

Why Vehicles Break Normal Modelling

Car bodywork is unforgiving in a way most subjects are not. Its surfaces are large, smooth and highly reflective, which means every imperfection in the surface shows up as a distortion in the reflection.

You can get away with slightly uneven topology on a rock or a character. On a car bonnet, a single misplaced vertex produces a visible ripple in every reflection, and it is instantly obvious.

Why Curves Instead of Polygons

This is how vehicles are designed in industry. Automotive CAD is surface-based — designers define character lines and build surfaces between them, because a surface generated from clean curves is mathematically smooth by construction.

Pushing polygons toward smoothness is the opposite approach, and it is why polygon-modelled cars so often have subtly wrong reflections.

Where It Applies

  • Vehicle modelling — the intended use
  • Product design — appliances, consumer electronics, anything with flowing surfaces
  • Hard-surface work — aircraft, hulls, helmets, curved panelling

How to Check Your Surfaces

Use a studio HDRI with strong horizontal bands and look at the reflections rather than the geometry. Distortions and pinches show up in reflection long before they are visible in wireframe.

Matcap shading in the viewport works for the same purpose while modelling — the surface reads far more honestly than under flat lighting.

Free CC0 HDRIs for this are available from Poly Haven.
