img2mat_pro — Image Palettes and Pantone Matching in Blender

img2mat_pro extracts a colour palette from an image and turns it into Blender materials — with PMS (Pantone Matching System) references and material callouts for documentation.

It is tiny, free, and aimed at a specific job most 3D add-ons ignore: matching real-world specified colours.

Who Actually Needs This

Product visualisation and design work, where colour is not a creative choice but a specification.

If a client's brand colour is a specific Pantone, “close enough” is not acceptable — and eyedropping a screenshot will not get you there. Being able to reference PMS values directly, and produce callouts documenting which material is which, is the difference between a render and a deliverable.

What It Does

  • Palette extraction — pull dominant colours from a reference image
  • PMS matching — map those colours to Pantone references
  • Material generation — create Blender materials from the palette rather than building each by hand
  • Material callouts — annotation output for specification documents

Where It Fits

Product design, packaging visualisation, architectural material boards, and any client work where the colour has to match something physical.

For general texturing it is the wrong tool — that is PBR territory, and colour is only one channel of a material.

A Colour Management Caution

Matching colours accurately in Blender means understanding the view transform. A material set to an exact value will not display as that value under AgX — that is the transform doing its job, not an error.

If you are colour matching, our guide to Blender colour management is worth reading first. Getting this wrong is the most common reason specified colours look wrong in a render.

Worth Knowing

The add-on is around 25 KB — genuinely small, doing one job. It is also newer and less battle-tested than most extensions, with a small number of ratings so far.
