Easy Retopology Addon- PolyQuilt Addon (Free) – Blender 5.3

PolyQuilt is a free retopology and low-poly modelling add-on for Blender that replaces a dozen separate operators with one hotkey-driven workflow. You draw topology directly on a high-poly surface, and it snaps as you go.

The original add-on has been maintained by the community as a fork, keeping it working on current Blender versions.

Why It Feels Faster

Manual retopology in stock Blender means constantly switching tools — add vertex, extrude, fill face, loop cut, snap, delete, repeat. The tool switching is what makes it tedious, not the decisions.

PolyQuilt collapses that into contextual actions on a single key. Click on empty space and you place a vertex. Drag from an edge and you extrude a face. Draw across geometry and it cuts. The tool infers what you meant from what you clicked, so your hand stays in one place and your attention stays on edge flow.

What It Is Good At

  • Retopologising sculpts — drawing clean quads over a dense mesh with surface snapping
  • Low-poly blockouts — fast game-asset silhouettes
  • Patching topology — fixing a region of an existing mesh without rebuilding it
  • Learning topology — the low friction makes it easier to experiment and see what works

Manual vs Automatic Retopology

PolyQuilt is manual. It makes you faster; it does not decide anything for you.

That is the right choice for characters, where edge loops need to sit where a face or joint will deform. For props, scans and AI-generated meshes, an automatic remesher is usually the better tool — AutoRemesher is free and handles that case well.

Compared with RetopoFlow, the paid standard for manual retopology, PolyQuilt is smaller in scope and free. RetopoFlow offers more specialised tools (contours, strips, patches); PolyQuilt offers one very fast general one.

Installing It

It is available through Blender Extensions, so you can install it from inside Blender rather than downloading a zip — Edit, Preferences, Get Extensions, then search for it.

Worth Knowing

There is a learning curve. Because actions are contextual, the first hour can feel unpredictable while you build a mental model of what each click will do. Push through it — the speed comes after that, not before.
