Retarget

Retargeting means moving animation from one skeleton onto another that has different bone names and different proportions. Done by hand it is constraint work bone by bone, or a renaming pass that has to match exactly. Retarget ships presets for the skeletons people actually hit — Mixamo, Unreal, VRoid, MMD, Daz, Auto Rig Pro — and folds in AnimAide’s curve tools and an action manager alongside them.

What It Does

  • Presets for Mixamo, Unreal, VRoid, MMD, Daz and Auto Rig Pro skeletons, with custom presets added from the N-panel
  • Binding tools that apply the constraints, convert to a metarig and align bones
  • Conversion tools for Rigify compatibility, bone renaming, metarig extraction and scale application
  • Animation side: action management, baking, FBX import, and root bone and root motion transfer
  • AnimAide’s toolset built in — curve editing, animation offset and key management
  • An Action Manager with asset library modes for organising clips
  • Surface rig creation for meshes and grease pencil

Good To Know

  • Free and open source under GPL-3.0-or-later, by KBS-DEV, with source, issue tracker and a YouTube tutorial playlist
  • Version 5.2.0, 220 KB. Requests file permission so it can import FBX from disk
  • Blender 5.0 minimum — by a distance the steepest requirement in this category. Anyone parked on 4.2 or 4.5 LTS cannot install it at all
  • 22,500+ downloads on Blender Extensions, rated 5.0 from 14 reviews
  • It is a fork combining Expy Kit by pKrime and AnimAide by aresdevo, merged since version 2.0.0. Presets written for Expy Kit need their conversion syntax updated by hand before they work here
  • Most of it lives in the right-click context menu in Object and Pose mode rather than a sidebar tab, which is why people install it and then cannot find it
  • The developer asks you to read the tooltips: some functions act only on the current slot, others reach across multiple animations. That distinction is not visible in the UI

Where It Fits

This is for people who move animation between skeletons regularly — mocap onto a custom rig, a Mixamo library onto a game character, VRoid or MMD imports into a Blender pipeline. The AnimAide inclusion means it doubles as a curve-editing toolkit, so it earns its place in a daily setup rather than sitting idle between jobs. The Blender 5.0 floor is the deciding factor: if your studio or your addons hold you on an LTS release, this is simply not available to you yet.
